Flashpoint Finchley 69! - Report

by Andrew Davidson
July 7, 2002

Here's a belated report on Flashpoint Finchley 69 which took place in April 2002. This saw the welcome return of old boys, Alex and Hedley. Alex is now divides his time between being a rock entrepreneur in London and a property tycoon in Florida and the latter seems to be doing him some good - he was looking fighting fit rather than dissolute for a change. Hedley is now an Arcanoscientist in Manchester but still takes an interest in martial arts and admired the props in our room which now also serves as a tai chi dojo.

The players and their decks were:

Colin Burton - Jammer - Tanked
Nithiyan Thiruudaian - Hand/Lotus - White Lotus
Mark Wheelhouse - Jammer - Suicider
Andrew Davidson - Arch/Hand/Mon/Lot - Purity
Dave Martin - Monarch - Fire Damage
Yuit Sum Vong - Asc/Dragon/Lotus - Ghost Temple
- Asc/Hand - Making the Cut
Tom Kassel - Arch/Jammer - Monkey Boy
Alex Wargacki - Arch/Lotus - Old Boy Network
Daniel VandenBurg - Arch/Purist - Paradox Tanks
Hedley Coppock - Dragon - Are You Tough Enough?
Ron Wheelhouse - Asc/Dragon - Bad News Bears
Andy Holt - Jammer/Monarch - Scrapheap Champions

Faction usage:

4 Jammer
4 Architect
4 Lotus
3 Hand
3 Monarch
3 Ascended
3 Dragon
1 Purist

That was a fairly even spread. Yuit was allowed to change decks because the deck she had planned to play had been left at home and she didn't care for the first deck that I lent her.

Round 1

Tom Kassel beat Daniel, Hedley, Mark
Alex Wargacki beat Andrew, Colin, Dave
Andy Holt beat Nithiyan, Ron, Yuit

Round 2

Daniel VandenBurg beat Andrew, Andy, Dave
Hedley Coppock beat Alex, Mark, Nithiyan
Ron Wheelhouse beat Colin, Tom, Yuit

This left us with 6 single winners. The event had gone quite quickly so far, so I proposed a 6-player final and sat down at the end of the long table to record it while the eliminated players played a consolation game. Here's what happened, The order of play was:

Daniel VandenBurg:
Alex Wargacki
Hedley Coppock
Tom Kassel
Ron Wheelhouse
Andy Holt

* Dan plays a second FSS to the right and a Purist Initiate
* Alex passes.
* Hedley's Friends attack Dan's FSS with Dirk Wisely's Gambit. The Initiate intercepts but Hedley reveals Eagle Mountain. Dan's Puzzle Garden takes one damage. Hedley plays a second FSS.
* Tom plays a FSS
* Ron plays a second FSS and a Student of the Bear. The Pledged attack Hedley's Friends - Ron doesn't want to be target for Dirk Wisely's gambit.

* Alex passes
* Hedley plays Dr John and his fourth FSS to start a third column. Attacks Alex's first FSS for the win with Big Mack and Dr John. Daniel intercepts Big Mack with the Test Subjects in the Savage. Ron Killdeers Dr John.
* Tom passes.
* Ron plays his fourth FSS.
* Andy plays Jack of all Trades but attacks Hedley's fourth FSS with the Dump Warrior and Darkness Priestess. It's a Möbius Gardens which takes 4 damage.

Turn 6
------
* Dan plays an Arcane Scientist and uses it to draw a card. Plays Quantum Sorcery and uses it to draw a card too. Healed the Test Subjects in the Savage. Played a Void Sorcerer which shut down Tom's Heaven's Peak and then attacked the Möbius Gardens. Tom intercepted it with Lusignan to kill it, of course.
* Alex passes
* Hedley's Big Mack makes a Golden Comeback. Plays Mad Dog McCroun too and Dr John joins them both in attacking Alex again for the win. Dan's Initiate in the MegaTank intercepts Big Mack and kills him but when the Test Subjects in the Savage try to do the same to Mad Dog, Victory goes to the Underdog and the Test Subjects are smoked. Ron now uses Fox Pass to divert Dr John but this still leaves the Mad Dog who hits the site which proves to be a Festival Circle. Game over!

Congratulations to Hedley on a most impressive victory. Kicking butt like this while most of the other players were still putting their boots on is an object lesson for those who want their multi-player games to be fast and furious. Here's the deck that did it with Hedley's own notes:
